Lying on your back on a special kind of "skateboard" , the luger flies down hill steering his board through the corners with subtle shifts of his body. Each board or sled is specially designed to fit the participant's body and speeds can easily reach 70 km's hour. The cost of these sleds and the additional gear generally does limit participation in competitions to adults in their late twenties or early thirties. Although the inclusion of Street :-Luge-: in the X games has improved the popularity of this extreme sport, the number of spectators is still much larger than the number of active street luge pilots. Events like the Gravity Games are now regularly organized in Australia, Europe and the United States, and have drawn large crowds making celebrities of many of the Street Luge pilots.
